Introduction

Islamic Perspectives: Resources on Ethics and Responsible Artificial Intelligence provides leaders within Muslim communities with an introductory course connecting the ethical issues that AI poses and some of the vast array of ethical and theological resources of the Islamic tradition. The course authors encourage religious communities to consider carefully and, where appropriate, to apply principles and knowledge covered in this course to inform engagement on AI. We approach this discussion with humility and hope, and pray for productive and good discussions within your group.

The five units

Open a unit for its summary and additional resources.

1 Unit 1 What is AI?

This unit provides the baseline for the discussions across the five units. It starts with a set of Core Definitions relevant for understanding AI, including looking at what AI is and what it is not. It then takes an introductory look at ethical questions around AI, such as the impact of immersive AI on young people and concerns about privacy and surveillance. Finally, it asks participants to think about where they want to be on the continuum of engaging with AI, between enthusiastic adoption, total rejection, or case-by-case adaptation to AI.

2 Unit 2 Knowledge, Authority, and Verification

This unit takes the vocabulary from Unit 1 and focuses it on the AI system participants are most likely to interact with directly: Large Language Models (LLMs). The session asks: How do LLMs work? What does it mean that they generate text by predicting the most likely next word? What happens when that prediction is confidently wrong? And what happens when AI fabricates not just text but voices, faces, and video?

3 Unit 3 Accountability, Decisionmaking, and Ownership

This unit asks what happens when AI makes decisions about people. Algorithmic decision systems already determine who gets a loan, who sees which news, who gets hired, who gets flagged by police. These systems operate at a scale no human decision-maker can match—which means their errors and biases also operate at that scale. It also looks at AI’s impact on privacy, asking what we disclose when we use these tools, and what they can infer about us that we never chose to share.

4 Unit 4 Uncertainty, the Future, and Advanced AI

This unit starts with a question of power, i.e., who actually owns and controls the systems shaping our lives, and traces the consequences outward: the societal harms that concentration is already producing, the security and safety risks now appearing on the horizon, and finally the speculative frontier of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and superintelligence. The session holds two realities at once: present harms that demand action now, and future risks that demand foresight.

5 Unit 5 Next Steps and Raising your Voice

This final session moves from understanding to action. It asks what you will do with this knowledge and how you will engage with AI. The session works at three levels—personal/household, communal/institutional, and civic/policy—and invites participants to make concrete commitments at each. It also provides a snapshot of the current policy landscape and makes the case that religious voices are needed in these conversations.
